Modern Jazz speaks many languages, but at age 25, nobody is more fluent that Cécile McLorin Salvant. With a show-stopping, Grammy-nominated debut record under her belt and a sophomore release on the horizon, it seems the sky is the limit for this classy, acclaimed virtuoso.
Salvant was swept from the warm stage lights of small Jazz clubs and placed under the world’s spotlight when her debut album, WomanChild, was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Critically, the album earned rave reviews from some of Jazz’s most decorated journalists. The sudden success of this much-deserving musician beckoned one big question: who is Cécile McLorin Salvant?
Well, her upcoming release For One to Love is here to tell you. For One to Love hones in on Salvant’s artistic inner workings, as she reflects on romance, love and life. A creative confessional, Salvant calls this album her most personal record yet.
“I can look at many of these songs, and see that this is an event that really happened, or a feeling I’ve lived through myself,” she said. “That’s what makes it so difficult to share. It’s almost like a diary entry.”
A poet behind the piano, five of the tracks on For One to Love are written by Salvant herself. In these songs lie the richest expressive moments on the album. Although sonically flawless, Salvant’s artistry does not end at the music on this record. While Salvant claims that music “chose” her, illustrating is something that she has chosen to do. She exercised this co-passion by creating the cover of For One to Love, making the album even more personal.
