Boney James Casting Internet Search For Singers For Next CD

January 27th, 2010 Brian

Boney JamesSmooth jazz saxophonist Boney James has announced an online search in 2010 for vocal collaborators to potentially appear on his next album. James has decided to harness the power of the Internet after experiencing good fortune with an unknown vocalist when recording his 2009 album Send One Your Love. It all began when James asked his friends if they knew anyone new he could work with, and a vocalist named Quinn was suggested.

“He really had the voice I was looking for on this track - a real retro/modern soulful voice,” explains James. “As soon as I heard it, I knew he was right and two days later he was flying to Los Angeles.” They subsequently recorded the song “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” and it is now nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance category. The Grammys will be held this Sunday (January 31).

“It’s a total blast for me to be nominated in this category,” James says about his nomination. Having previously recorded with such artists as Faith Evans, George Benson, Anthony Hamilton and Angie Stone, James says: “I’ve always felt a bit like an R&B singer trapped in a sax player’s body. When I play, it really is in my mind like I’m singing and I’ve often referred to my music as instrumental R&B. So to have this recognition in the genre of music that has always been so inspirational to me is a great honor.”

James is excited to cast the net wide on the Internet for undiscovered vocal collaborators. “I’m always just trying to match a singer with the song,” he says when asked about what kind of singers he’s looking for. “Since I’m still writing it’s hard to say, but so much is just inspiration – I’ll know it when I hear it.”

Boney currently a Top 10 song on the Smooth Jazz Top 20 chart with “Touch.”

January 26th, 2010 Brian

Pat Metheny - OrchestrionGrammy Award-winning guitarist Pat Metheny today (January 26) offers an ambitious new project titled Orchestrion, where he works solo with musical instruments he can control. Orchestrion is a generic name for a machine that plays music and is designed to sound like an orchestra or band. The project, a true solo project, represents a recently developed conceptual direction for Metheny that involves the merging of an idea from the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries with the technologies of today to create a project that will only have the guitarist on it and no one else.

His world tour in support of the recording begins in the U.S. in early April. A full list of shows are listed at patmetheny.com, where Metheny also writes extensively about the project.

Metheny has recorded more than 30 albums, picking up 17 Grammy Awards along the way. He records solo and with his renown Pat Metheny Group. Along the way, Metheny has recorded such popular smooth jazz songs as “James,” “Last Train Home,” “Follow Me,” “Chris,” “Facing West” and “Here to Stay.”

Groundbreaking Starts On Health Center Named After Wayman Tisdale

January 25th, 2010 Brian

Wayman TisdaleCommunity leaders broke ground on the $20 million Oklahoma University Wayman Tisdale Specialty Health Center in Tulsa, OK, on Monday (January 25). Plans for the clinic have been in the works for more than four years. The decision to honor Wayman Tisdale came last June, a month after he lost his battle with cancer.

Diagnostic and preventive tests and services will be available, like CT scans, MRIs, mammograms, colonoscopies, chemotherapy, outpatient surgery and even an urgent care center. The health center will carry forward his tradition of caring by bringing specialty medicine to undeserved residents in north, west and east Tulsa. It was Tisdale’s battle with cancer that led him to form the Wayman Tisdale Foundation and to also align himself with the University of Oklahoma OU Cancer Institute.

The Wayman Tisdale center is expected to be complete in about two years.

Tisdale lived in Tulsa, and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a three-time All-American. After his pro basketball career, Tisdale became a smooth jazz superstar.
